This was a beautiful and moving tribute. You are so lucky to have gotten to share so much time with a hero, and the fact that he seems to have been in real-life a high quality, classy human being makes it that much better. I was living within walking distance from Words book store in 2015 and I'm disappointed that I didn't know about this book event back then! Now I love to read your frequent posts and blog pieces and feel fortunate to be informed about all the great upcoming musical events-especially the local ones. We have tickets for SOMA Rocks tomorrow, otherwise I would have been at 'Friends show with Jaimoe. I hope to catch the one in Englewood in the Spring.

Such a beautiful, raw tribute to an amazing human being. My husband, who is first a drummer but also a multi-instrumentalist, and I were so honored to hear The Freight Train Band in Tallahassee. Butch was working with young musicians from FSU, mentoring them in the best way possible, and they were on stage with him. It truly was a night to remember!

Alan, I truly appreciate all you have written for us, your readers, in book and in digital media. My blood brother lives in California and I am pretty sure he will get this email update from LD&D. We both subscribe to LD&D, it was actually him that turned me on to your books!

It's tragic that Butch chose to take his own life. For the rest of our time here on Earth, I will just remember his life and the beauty that came from him. RIP, Brother.

Such a loving tribute Alan! I remember hearing something about Butch being broke and facing bankruptcy. If that was the case I know his legions of fans and admirers would have opened wallets wide and helped our brother. What talent he had♥️

Thank you. It’s always more complicated than a single thing. Out of respect for his family I never discuss the circumstances.

Thanks for the post.It was heartbreaking. The Allman Brothers Band was a collection of players that without one would not be the same, especially Butch. He was the locomotive that drove the tain down the tracks. Also Berry's solid and exploring bottom and Butch's thundering drums were the foundation of the band.RIP Butch,Dickey,Gregg,Berry and Duane.May your memory and legacy live on forever! On a more somber note,I had a close friend commit suicide a few years go.Like you I questioned myself if I could have done something.I wished I had known and could have one last conversation. The problem with depressed or mentally ill people is that they keep it internalized because of shame. So ,don't beat yourself over it.I would suggest to everyone out there that if you think that a friend or loved one is suicidal tell them to get help.Duane Allman was the best guitar player that ever was and his band,The Allman Brothers was and will always be the best band that ever existed! God bless Jaimoe
