There would be no heartbreakers without mike . Tom was larger than life, no doubt and being a wilbury elevated him to the stratosphere in my eyes, but having that solid band family ( benmont, too ) solidified his place in superstardom. Thanks again for sharing this interview. Another book i look forward to reading😃

Another great guitarist playing and writing behind another great name! Kinda like Dickey Betts.

Well, Dickey was singing and writing by himself half the songs after the first two albums and was the visual focus on stage for decades.

Wonderful! I know it's a delight for you as a musician to write about musicians. Maybe it's as much or more of a delight to write about a writer who writes about musicians?

Yes. You have no idea how much more deeply geeky i could make this.

too funny! Either the writing or the music I'm sure.

Yeah... i always want people to ask my about the writing process instead of the artist covered, but no one cares... except other writers.

Well done, Alan. It's great to see Mike Campbell getting the attention he deserves.

The casual rock fan has no idea of the number of songs Campbell has co-written or the huge role he played in the overall sound of Petty's music.

True. I’ve spent my whole career trying to illustrate such things but casual fans don’t read music magazines or writer’s blogs!

This Marty Stuart song is a perfect example of a fantastic Mike Campbell co-write.

I’m almost done with the audio book and it’s one of my favorite rock memoirs ever (and I’ve read an embarrassing amount of them haha) - it doesn’t peter out after fame comes like many of them seem to do. Mike’s voice (both literally, and the way it comes through the writing) is just so damn likeable and grounded.
