This truly is a great "lost" interview with one of the top 5 songwriters on the planet. Like many Replacements/Westerberg fans, I believe the music he has rotting in his basement is probably better than 90 percent of what's out there. Thank you for sharing.

Surprisingly I had never thought about the influence The Replacements had on early Wilco/Tweedy Paul's response cracked me up. This was a great read.

Awesome interview, thanks!

The Wilco/Son Volt thing is funny because i am a huge Uncle Tupelo fan as well and as far as I am aware Jeff Tweedy openly admits how much they idolized and imitated the Replacements....but I guess not back in 1996?

Thanks. I guess so. I truly don’t recall. I remember i was surprised by his vehemence there.

Figuring there couldn’t be anything new I’ve not already read or heard…I read this anyway…with all things ‘mats I always will…but to my surprise there was new stuff here. Definitely captured a few glimpses I’ve not seen of PW before especially the tender hearted comments about Cobain. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks. At the time I did this, Paul’s love of blues, specifically Albert King, was a revelation to me. The Mats were an outlier for me, because I was a blues guy. This made it all make sense to me.
