Wow, does this bring back a lot of memories. I grew up right down the road from the UM. My high school actually beat Bias and Northwestern in the state championship in 1982. I was there. It was unreal. His death was a shock to everybody. Even non-Terp b-ball fans. I remember when it came out that coke had caused it, a lot of people I knew who loved Bias were heavily invested in the idea that it was the first time he had ever done it. Almost like they were trying to find a way to make sense of it. Wish I could say such an earthshaking event kept me from ever touching the stuff, but I actually started doing it within days of Bias' death and didn't stop until 25 years later. So glad I did. So many eerie memories of that time...They had a huge memorial service for him at Cole Field House but my friends and I couldn't get anywhere near the place- Rt. 1 was backed up for miles. Almost as shocking was four years later when his younger brother was murdered in the parking lot of PG Plaza by a jealous boyfriend. Those poor parents.

Great article Alan.

I was taking summer classes that year, and was in and around campus. I remember it vividly. I remember the draft, how proud we all were. I remember the shock, the fallout, the end of lefty, and the sadness... the sadness.

I was a huge Celtic fan, had even gone to see them play in Atlanta that previous spring. Bias was going to be an incredible addition….I figured he’d be a potent sixth man a couple of seasons, then eventually he would swap places with one of the starters. I’m still stunned 35 years later at what was lost not just for the Celtics but for the league….some great Celtic/Laker series that we all would have loved.

Terrific article Alan! The Bias news was a complete shocker. As a Celtics fan, I was devastated. But basketball and the sporting works lost a very special athlete that day. The Celtics have never really recovered, less 2008. They have 17 titles but only 1 since 1986.
