Great to read this again and how incredible to get to witness Ritchie playing the epic classic with the boys. “It was a great pleasure and I’ll see you in the bar”!
I recommend all guitarists use my method for studying Ritchie Blackmore's performance on the studio version of "Smoke On the Water." That is, TURN UP THE VOLUME tippy-top (if your neighbor's hair is standing at attention, you've achieved the correct decibel level). Now, head-bang at-will: can you hear the tricky under-notes? No? Buy a higher-watt amp and continue until Nirvana is achieved! Thanks, Ritchie, for an eardrum-pounding, life-affirming riff. Long live Deep Purple!
Miracles happen. The 93’ blow up was pretty intense, but good to see in their late 70’s and 80’s these cats got back together for a jam. Ritchie is defiantly an interesting interview, thoughtful guy.
can't tell whether Chad meant 'definitely', but I guess it could go either way with RB. This was a great clip, really good to see them together after 33y. PS wtf, 33y? Seems like last week to me.
Great interview! Takes me back to riding in the car and listening to Macine Head on 8 track! Always liked Rainbow also, although not as heavy as Deep Purple.
Cool conversation. He is incredible player. Mercurial for sure but love his work. The Purple and Raimbow. Hell yeah.
Amazing interview! He is one of the GOATs.
Slow talkin’ Walter?

That will work.
I'm still laughing at the image of a cool, calm Frank Zappa telling the crowd to calm down and then immediately jumping out a window.
Great article! I saw Deep Purple years ago with Ritchie playing. When he started with that riff, we all went crazy.
an article like this is only as good as the questions asked and this article along with the questions both get an A+ from this reader today!!
Learned interesting things I have no use for but I like to learn so it's all good. Thx Alan
I think RItchie lives on Long Island somewhere doesn't he? So cool they dragged him out to Jones Beach.
Yep. He did years ago and I assume he still does.
THANK YOU!!!
:)

Definitely meant that, lol. Spelling champ I’m not.

Friends of The Brothers was great last Friday. Good to see you.
Arrogant. Deep Purple could have been as big as LZ throughout the 80s. Or, Rainbow, same thing.
