I interviewed Derek in 1999, after he had been named a member of the Allman Brothers Band, but before the then-19-year-old had played his first gig with them. Here it is.
Thanks for sharing this early interview with Derek; Alan!! I've always been able to tell Derek is a leader but I'm amazed at the goals he had for himself as a not yet 20 year old. Congrats to his early teachers; you can tell his feet are firmly anchored to the ground of his music. What a great fact that he is evolving and has so much more to share with us. You go in a good way Truck!
Love this, Alan. I’m sharing some of my dad’s vignettes from his time as a music executive at Warner Bros. in my current memoir. I’d be honored if you might like to give it a read:
I appreciate you asking Derek about his musical voice and how he intended to find it. While he may have known some of the expectation the band had for him, I'm not sure they knew - or anyone else except the Colonel- how far he could go. How ironic he would use the term being grounded in Skydog.

This is really cool. Thanks for sharing, Alan
Thanks Sam.
Derek’s an old soul. You can hear it and feel it. I appreciate that in him.

Oops he didn't say that, my bad. Wanted to edit post, wouldn't let me.
Close enough!
