Yeah. all such lists must be taken with a grain of salt. What I was doing here was looking for songs that would allow us to write about different aspects of Robbie's playing, and Warren really did make a lot of the choices.
How did the time fly so quickly? You need more room for so MANY good songs. I have accidentally got old. Thanks for your work. It means something to a sentimental nobody.
What's so great about Further on up the road, is Clapton's guitar strap coming undone and Eric calling out to him, "Robbie"! And Robertson just jumping right in with a hot lick until Clapton gets resituated, without missing a beat - Two total professionals.
Amazing list and commentary. There could obviously be another 10 and another 10, and another... Maybe not quite a top 10, but likely in the second 10 for me would be "Broken Arrow." I was reminded how great that song was last Sunday when Dead and Co. played it with Graham Lesh. John Mayer sang it beautifully -- very much right in his wheelhouse.
I forwarded your post to a friend, Garth, former professional musician who toured with Pearl Jam, is a big fan of The Band, named his kids after the other members. he swooned in response, sent me a pic of Robbie’s memoir which he had just started reading. Thanks for nudging some friends to converge.
Love Robbie! Both he and Jerry passed on my birthday. List is great but I appreciate a lot of his solo stuff and those first two albums are tops in my book. I would add Broken Arrow, Soap Box Preacher and Somewhere Down That Crazy River to the list. Whenever I cover Soap Box Preacher on solo guitar, people are always commenting on what a great song it is.
To think that thirty years ago today August 8th, I was at Summerstage in Central Park watching Ratdog open for The Band enjoying the beautiful weather and fantastic music, mail order sent in and thinking about fall tour. And then the next morning the news broke….
These are great songs, mostly by the Band. I am not sure this list captures the best of Robbie as guitarist and several are songs written mostly by other members of the Band. Robbie did some great work producing for others. I would definitely have put "Broken Arrow" on here.
